Wine Snobbery 101
- Always assume you know more about wine than the person sitting
beside you.
- Constantly refer to vintage charts and classic regional
vintages.
-Pepper wine conversations with buzzwords like 'brett' (brettanomyces)
and 'VA' (volatile acidity) - if you don't know what those words
mean then stop pretending, you wanna-be snob!
- Refer to famous producers and wine critics by their initials- 'DRC'
(Domaine de la Romanée Conti) and 'RP'
(Robert Parker).
- Drink wine from only one region.
- Always ask intriguing questions about yield "How many
hectolitres (100 litres) are produced per hectare (2.471 acres)" and be certain
to delve into whether the cap (grape skins, seeds etc. that form a solid mass on
the surface of the juice during fermentation) was punched down mechanically or
by hand?
- If you have already graduated from Wine Snobbery 101-Bravo!
Stop now, you already know too much.

Tripping through BC Wine
Country
Where do I start? Perhaps at the beginning...
Day1-Naramata
Bench
La Frenz Winery
A newly operational tasting room with a great view. Although owner/winemaker
Jeff Martin was unable to greet us (I suspect he was whoopin' it up at the
Calgary Stampede) we enjoyed our tasting thoroughly. After all, we'd just driven
in from Vancouver and were ready to relax in wine country.
La Frenz Semillon, Naramata BC, 2005-Rich tropical fruit, white flowers
and delicate herbal aromas. Lovely oily mouth-texture with just a hint of spice
and complexity from the teaser of oak barrel fermentation.
$17.00 Private wine stores and
winery
Wine Diva tasted- July 10, 2006
La Frenz Chardonnay, Naramata BC, 2005-Orchard fruit, melon and minerals,
round mouth-feel softly spiced and vanilla-y with warm oak on the finish.
$18.00

Wine Diva tasted- July 10, 2006
La Frenz Alexandria, Naramata BC, 2005-A bold sweet treat. Candied aromas of
pineapple, spiced figs, minerals, wild honey and rose petals. Full bodied
on the palate with a glycerin texture sweet but cleans up nicely on the finish.
Great sipper or with paired with spiced dishes. Blend of Siegerebbe
(Madeline Angevine+Gewurztraminer) & Shoneberger (unknown).
$18.00
Private wine stores and
winery
Wine Diva tasted- July 10, 2006
La Frenz Merlot, Naramata BC, 2004-Black fruit-cherries and plums, licorice
and white pepper-aromas are all sweetness and spice. The aromas
follow through onto the palate, not jammy but excellent structure and intensity
with firm chewy tannins.
$24.00 Private wine stores and
winery
Wine Diva tasted- July 10, 2006
La Frenz Montage, Naramata BC, 2004-Intriguing blend of bright cherry fruit
(maraschino) plums and licorice. Medium bodied, earthy yet shows fresh fruit,
subtle game flavours and tobacco on the finish.
(70% Pinot Noir, 20% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon).
$18.00 Private wine stores and

Wine Diva tasted- July 10, 2006
La Frenz Liqueur Muscat, Naramata BC-Made from the same two grape varieties
as the Alexandria (Shoneberger & Siegerebbe}.Rich honeyed aromas and dried fruit
set into a warm golden-reddish liquid. Creamy sweet on the palate with smoked
nuts and cedar flavours. Lovely!

La Frenz Tawny, Naramata BC-Deeper hued than the Muscat-more cherry wood and
ruby tones in the

cedar wood on the palate with a sweetly spiced finish.

Next Stop...Poplar Grove
As usual there was little
left at Poplar Grove to sample or purchase...except cheese (which is
never a bad thing) and the one wine that they produce (Pinot Blanc) strictly for
sale at the winery's tasting room.
Wine Diva knows that it is never a bad thing
to always sell out your product each vintage so deciding to have something
available to sell when everything else is gone is a nice touch. Jess was at the
helm in the tasting room providing information about upcoming releases (like the
Gamay Nouveau I always have to get while I'm in Naramata) providing us samples
the delectable Poplar Grove cheeses and being a absolute doll.
Poplar Grove Pinot Blanc, Naramata BC, 2005-Soft white floral aromas with
prevalent mineral tones. In the mouth it is crisp, creamy and citrus-y with
herbal nuances. Definitely a food or (ahem) cheese wine.
$18.00 only at Poplar Grove Winery
Wine Diva tasted- July 10, 2006
Poplar Grove
Pinot Gris, Naramata BC, 2005-We
are guilty of having polishing off two entire cases of the Poplar Grove Pinot
Gris (or PGPG as Wine Diva likes to call it) this summer already. Jess informed
us during our brief visit that this is the first vintage that the PGPG was made
in 100% stainless steel. Ripe tropical fruit, pineapple, apple and
pear with mineral and blossom aromas. Creamy yet fresh and lively in the mouth
with zippy grapefruit finish.
*Pairs extremely well with the nutty and creamy Poplar Grove Double Cream
Camembert!
$21.90 Private wine stores and winery
Wine Diva tasted- July 10, 2006
Poplar Grove New Block Merlot, Naramata BC, 2004-It had been released just
two weeks prior to our arrival so it was still a bit young and tight (mind out
of the gutter please). The vines are younger than the exceedingly popular
Bench Merlot and was therefore lighter with fresh cherries, violets and
earthy aromas. Spicy and creamy in the mouth with sour cherry, some tobacco and
mint.
$20.00
Cheese pairings:
Poplar Grove Tiger Blue (great for those of you who think you don't like
the sharpness of stilton.

Soldiers...
Red Rooster
It's always busy at Red Rooster. The new winery and wine
shop is a tourist draw. Castle-like with a great fountain in the parking lot and
a second floor art gallery. Did I forget to mention the huge patio overlooking
Okanagan Lake and the vineyards which serves simple wine country lunches?
We tasted the portfolio of wines (under the guidance of the very knowledgeable
and witty Peter) before sitting down for a light lunch-after all
Wine Diva had just driven five hours from
Vancouver (albeit through the backyard of beautiful BC) and was in severe need
of a nosh.
Thinking a nice cheese plate and a salad to share would be just enough to tide
us over until dinner that evening we were amazed to see our lunch arrive! The
salad was a mountain of spring mix greens, light vinaigrette and chevre
(approx.$8). The cheese plate at $12.50 was immense (without a lie, something
you would pay $40 in Vancouver if not more)! It was a platter overflowing with
fresh fruit, dried fruit, nuts, Brie, Chevre, Blue cheese, a washed rind soft
cow's milk cheese and chunks of parmesan drizzled with honey-a veritable feast!
All consumed while enjoying the beautiful view and sunshine.
Winery manager Blair Dufty (previously from the Naramata Inn) came by to say
hello and see how we liked the new menu. Wine Diva
had met Blair the year previously in Penticton when we were both accepting up
wine list awards. It's good to see him at Red Rooster.
Red Rooster Bantam, Naramata BC, 2005-A blend of Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc,
Pinot Auxerrois, Vidal and Chardonnay. Fun and frivolous with pineapple, orchard
fruit and honey on the nose. In the mouth it's fresh light and creamy,
just off dry with anise and sweet spices on the finish.
$13.90 Private wine stores and the winery
Wine Diva tasted- July 10, 2006
Red Rooster Unoaked Chardonnay, Naramata BC, 2005-Melon, ripe pear
and hints of zingy pineapple. Fresh, easy drinking with a sweet spiced
finish and nice acidity.
$15.90Private wine stores and the winery
Wine Diva tasted- July 10, 2006
Red Rooster Grand Reserve Chardonnay, Naramata BC, 2004-
Creamed corn, buttery orchard fruit aromas drizzled with vanilla. Smooth,
oily mouth-feel with creamy melon and pear fruit. Not too oak-y for those who
prefer a cleaner Chardonnay style. Lovely!
$24.90 Private wine stores and the winery
Wine Diva tasted- July 10, 2006
Red Rooster Pinot Blanc, Naramata BC, 2005-Fresh, floral
and chock full of summer orchard, citrus and pineapple. Nice balance between
fresh and creamy, slight earthiness but finishing with grapefruit and herbal
nuances.
$15.90 Private wine stores and the winery
Wine Diva tasted- July 10, 2006
Red Rooster Pinot Gris, Naramata BC, 2005-Creamy pit fruit aromas
(peach/apricot) honey and white flowers. Bright and clean in the mouth, fresh
mountain stream, similar peach/apricot flavours and finishing with lively citrus
peel.
$16.90 Private wine stores and the winery
Wine Diva tasted- July 10, 2006
Red Rooster Viognier, Naramata BC, 2005-Starts lightly on the entry and
builds softly into honeyed apricots and Asian 5-spice. Fresh in the mouth, (not
the overripe booze bomb that can sometimes be found in Viognier) with anise,
soft fruit and creamy citrus.
$16.90 Private wine stores and the winery
Wine Diva tasted- July 10, 2006
Red Rooster Riesling, Naramata BC, 2005-Crisp green apple, mineral,
soft floral aromas. Bright summer orchard fruit flavours and pink grapefruit
make a refreshingly off-dry sipper with a slightly hot finish.
$14.90 Private wine stores and the winery
Wine Diva tasted- July 10, 2006
Red Rooster Blanc de Noirs, Naramata BC, 2005-Blanc de noirs basically means
making white wine from red grapes. Translation, the colour can be
decided by how long you leave the red skins in contact with the juice. For
example, a brilliant hued rosé may have skin contact for 24-72 hours but in the
case of this particular Red Rooster, the Pinot Noir skins were in contact
with the juice for a mere hour. The colour is clear with just a hint of
pink with tropical fruit and red berry aromas tinged with earth, stone and
mineral notes. Round and fresh with slightly sweet berry flavours.
A perfect summer sipper.
$14.90 Private wine stores and the winery
Wine Diva tasted- July 10, 2006
Red Rooster Gewurztraminer, Naramata BC, 2005-Turkish delight (honey and
figs), lychee, orange blossoms and hints of cold cream on the nose (Wine
Diva wishes her face cream smelled like this). Somewhat delicate on
the palate, clean flavours, sweet spices and a long licorice finish.
$14.90 Private wine stores and the winery
Wine Diva tasted- July 10, 2006
Red Rooster Merlot, Naramata BC, 2003-Deep aromas of plum, chocolate,
tobacco and cedar. Earthy and fresh with well integrated tannins.
The 2004 (will be released as soon as the 2003 is depleted) is juicy,
lighter bodied and with a bit more minty/greenish flavours. It is still
tight but it should soften and integrate nicely as it ages.
$19.90Private wine stores and the winery
Wine Diva tasted- July 10, 2006
Red Rooster Grand Reserve Merlot, Naramata BC, 2004-Dried
fruit, sun-warmed dark fruit, plums, cherry and earthy aromas. Still
slightly astringent (will soften with some time) with dark flavours of
chocolate covered cherries.
$34.90 Private wine stores and the winery
Wine Diva tasted- July 10, 2006
Red Rooster Meritage, Naramata BC, 2004- Bordeaux style with green bell
peppers and earth with a dark fruit/cassis combination. Solid chewy
tannins and strong oak influences. Cellar this wine, give it some time and try
in again in 2007.

Inn for
the night...
Naramata Heritage Inn
Fortunately we had a couple hours to decompress before dinner. Whenever
possible, while on vacation (although from the size of this newsletter you can
guess how much vacation time I actually had) Wine Diva
dines where she stays.
That way, I can relax, have (some) wine and stumble back to my bed without
breaking a beat. While relaxing on the deck outside our quaint little room at
the Inn we sipped some Poplar Grove Pinot Gris we were sure to purchase en
route.
www.naramatainn.com
The Cobblestone Wine Bar at Naramata Heritage Inn- Most people were finishing up when
we arrived for dinner so it was pleasantly calm. We chose a seat on the lovely
patio and ordered a bottle of the very pretty and very sold out La Frenz
Small Lot's Sauvignon Blanc, 2005 (Wine Diva
reviewed in April 2006). Rich tropical fruit, gooseberry and zippy
grapefruit, creamy, finishing with refreshingly and lovely crisp green apple.
We started with a Terrine of Salmon Arm Goat Cheese, with dried cherry,
pistachio praline and pickled golden beets and Local mixed greens salad with
Poplar Grove Tiger Blue, hazelnuts and balsamic vinaigrette.
Because we'd had such a late lunch we decided to take it light and order a mixed
cheese (no surprise there) and antipasti plate with roasted red peppers, figs
and olives. To finish we ordered a glass of Van Westen Voluptuous
Naramata 2003- A seriously rich wine with red berries, prunes, black plums
and black cherry. Velvety mouth, with mellow tannins and tobacco(67% Merlot, 33%
Cabernet Franc).
and
Pentage Pinot Noir, Okanagan 2005- Smoked cherries, cocoa, white pepper,
leather and game meat. Hot and spiced in the mouth-forest floor, cedar and
tobacco and a peppery finish.
Day 2
Van
Westen
As per a prior discussion WD
called Robert Van Westen at 10:00 am on day 2. When he answered the phone I said
we were on our way and where could we meet? Calmly he said, "Well actually I am
in the hospital, I rolled my tractor and broke my hip".
Wow.
As it turns out Robert broke his hip socket in numerous places requiring
extensive surgery and 42 staples. So much for harvest. He'll be out for three
months.
Get well Robert!
Wine Diva managed to track down a bottle of
his Vivacious anyways!
Van Westen Vivacious, Naramata BC, 2004- This blend of Pinot Blanc (96%)
and Pinot Gris has lovely clean aromas of fresh mountain stream, flint, white
flowers and a hint of smoke and lees. Lushly weighted on the tongue with citrus,
sun-warmed peaches and vanilla spices.

Therapy Vineyards
It took Wine Diva a moment to recognize the
changes made to the original Red Rooster tasting room and winery.
Therapy has done some significant upgrades since the last time I visited,
and it's all good! From the colourful Rorschach label and witty labels like
'Pink Freud' and 'Freudian Sip' to the t-shirts and newly completed bed and
breakfast on site, Therapy has used their marketing dollars wisely.
Therapy Gewurztraminer, Naramata BC, 2005-Melon and pear sprinkled with
soft sweet spices. Apricot in the mouth with a Galliano liqueur (remember that
classic '70's elongated bottle filled with neon yellow liquid) and mandarin
orange peel.

Therapy Chardonnay, Naramata BC, 2004-Buttercothch aromas with peaches
stewed in vanilla syrup. In the mouth the flavours seems more
creamy baked apple, spice and nuts.

Wine Diva tasted- July 11, 2006
Therapy Freudian Sip, Naramata BC, 2005- Fresh aromas of soft peaches and
pears, hints of tropical fruit and some mineral notes. In the mouth, sweet
grapefruit, flower water essence, slightly chalky flavours and creamy
citrus.(60% Kerner, 30% Pinot Gris, 10% Gewurztraminer)

flavours with dusty tannins on the finish.

Lang Vineyards
A little bird told me (Much to Wine Diva's
delight) that Lang is planning to revisit their days of Sparkling wine.
With a new German winemaker who has the knowledge (and obviously the desire) to
bring sparkling wine production back to Lang again. Unfortunately
they did sell the necessary equipment needed to make bubbles but plans are in
the works. With the popularity of sparkling wine these days-having Lang
back in the BC game is a winning idea.
Lang Pinot Gris, Naramata BC, 2005-Green apple, candied fruit aromas and
orange blossoms. Bright flavours, mandarin orange, ripe peach and apricots and
refreshing grapefruit.
$17.90 Private wine stores and at the winery
Wine Diva tasted- July 11, 2006
Soaring Eagle Pinot Gris, Naramata BC, 2004- Creamy aromas of buttered
nuts, chalky minerals and soft orchard fruit. Medium bodied with a rich
mouth-feel and lightly spiced oak finale.
$19.90 Private wine stores and at the winery
Wine Diva tasted- July 11, 2006
Lang Pinot Noir, Naramata BC, 2005- A very lightly oaked Pinot Noir with
aromas of fresh berries. Light body and fresh (would be nice lightly chilled)
with peppery and herbal flavours. An inexpensive light summer Pinot.

Wine Diva tasted- July 11, 2006
Lang Grand Pinot, Naramata BC, 2005- An interesting blend of Pinot Noir,
Pinot Meunier and Lemburger. Spiced red berries, pepper and herbs, still young
and a tad green but it had only been in the bottle for two weeks when I tasted
it. A suitable wine for those that are not big red wine drinkers.

Kettle Valley
Although I am sure it's not something Kettle Valley wants to be recognized
for...I always remember their tasting room for it's Slush Puppie machine
churning with
Gewurztraminer slushie. Unfortunately I am always driving on this excursion so I
haven't actually tasted one yet!
But Kettle Valley wines are worth trying and certainly worth a visit.
Even if many of my favorites were sold out during this visit (the Viognier, the
Semillon Sauvignon and the).
Kettle Valley Pinot Gris, Naramata BC, 2005-Amber hued with bright fruity
peach and ripe pear aromas. Great structure, lush with creamy citrus and lemon
peel.

Kettle
Valley Adra Station Chardonnay Reserve, Naramata BC, 2000- When I was
building wine lists, this Chardonnay was always at the top of my BC Chardonnay
list. The 2000 obviously has some age on it since I last tried it and it shows
in the new complexity. Super buttery, aromas of creamed corn, baked pears, earth
and cold cream. Intense Flavours of spice, nuts and obvious oak, the fruit has
diminished but Chardonnay lovers with revel in this wine.

Lake Breeze
If we hadn't been in a hurry to hit the road, we would have loved to
lunch at the critically acclaimed Lake Breeze Patio-Mahdina's! Alas it
would have to be another day, another trip to Naramata.
Lake Breeze Semillon, Naramata BC, 2005-Rich tropical aromas (almost
oily-smelling the perception of weight?) citrus and forest growth-earthy
aromas. Lush yet fresh mouth-feel, easy sipping, but would be great with
food, floral and lemon balm.

Lake Breeze Ehrenfelser, Naramata BC, 2005-There are (to
WD's knowledge) three unblended Ehrenfelsers
available in BC (Cedar Creek, Summerhill and Lake Breeze) all good, all
slightly different. The Lake Breeze is so very pretty-bold aromas of Turkish
delight, rose water, honey, orange blossoms and tropical fruit notes.

On the road north
Adora Estate Winery
As you fly along #97 at Summerland heading north toward Kelowna pay attention to
the signs along the right side of the road. This is when you'll see the sign
(and pull-off) to Adora. A large functional building greets you, pull into
parking spaces provided and wander into the tasting room. At that point (if you
are fortunate to arrive when this lovely, exuberant lady is working) you will
meet Janice who will give you the option of purchasing your tasting glass (with
Adora logo) and sampling wines for free or they will lend you a glass and
charge a nominal fee for each sample.
Adora Riesling, Okanagan BC, 2003-Steely. Minerals, sweet red apples,
smokey, flinty, hot and creamy in the mouth. Some aged gruyere would be nice
about now!

Adora Gewurztraminer, Okanagan BC, 2002- You may notice a trend here. The
wines I am reviewing from Adora are older than most others. Owner Reid Jenkins
told Wine Diva is they want their wines to
be styled after the great wines of Alsace so they hold them back and allow them
to age more before releasing them.
The Gewurztraminer is full of orchard fruit-nectarines and green apples,
minerals with a clean, hot, spiced Alsatian mouth more austere and less sweet
than the typical BC Gew.

Time for

Dirty Laundry
The charming surfer-dude persona of Ron Watkins makes
the visit to Dirty Laundry (formerly Scherzinger) worth the long and
wind-y road up. There was very little left in the tasting room of this small but
mighty little winery but Ron took the time to chat with
Wine Diva about his family, the wines and the
outrageously fun (and cheeky) marketing behind the 'hush hush' Dirty Laundry
label.
Due to the quality and age of the Scherzinger vines, the marketing, winemaking
and mischievous personality of the wines, BC consumers have cleaned them off the
shelves.
Here are a couple of WD's previous reviews
and new reviews as well.
Ron Watkins
Dirty Laundry 'Woo Woo Vines' Gewurztraminer, Okanagan BC,
2005- Knock-your-socks-off aromatics of rosewater, Turkish
delight and sweet 5-spice. If you could smell sweet (which you
really can't, only make the correlation between certain aromas and
sweetness) you would think this was going to be dessert
wine-esque. But it's not. Off-dry yes, and with an oily mouth-feel
and hot-spiced finale.
A perfect pairing would be fresh Indian poori studded with crushed red chilies (small
super-thin discs made from-wheat or chick pea flour) deep frying
them fills them up with steam, so they puff up into little lava-hot balloons. Woo Woo...perfect!
$16.90 (sold out or very limited quantities)
Wine Diva tasted-June 30 2006
Dirty Laundry 'Thread Bare Vines' Gewurztraminer, Okanagan BC,
2005-Unlike the WooWoo Gewurztraminer from Dirty Laundry (Wine
Diva was the first to write this wine up last year)
which is quite sweet, the Thread Bare is a dryer style
but still full of all the necessary elements-orange blossoms,
citrus blossoms and rosewater with orchard fruit, glycerin and
spice.
$15.90 (sold out-only available in restaurants)
Wine Diva tasted-June 20 2006
Dirty Laundry Riesling, Okanagan BC, 2005- Candied orchard fruit aromas
rounded off with floral notes, minerals and tropical fruit. Bright fruit
flavours in the mouth, grapefruit, lemony-zest, sweet spices and a perfumed
creaminess. A lovely wine!

Thornhaven
This was WD's first trip to this winery (the only first of this trip
actually) and I loved the gorgeous adobe-styled patio with bold red cushions
accenting the patio furnishings. Although they do not have any food service here
the Fraser family encourages folks to bring their picnics and enjoy the
Thornhaven view and hospitality.
As a boon, Thornhaven are one of the few who's prices have not
skyrocketed this vintage after the devastating drop in 2005 grapes.
Thornhaven Chardonnay, Okanagan BC, 2003- Deep toasty oak aromas and very
soft orchard fruit. Creamy mouth-feel spice and vanilla with a citrus zest
finish.

Thornhaven
Sauvignon Blanc/Chardonnay (unoaked), Okanagan BC, 2005- A veritable fruit

Fresh and vibrant in the mouth rounded out with a creamy texture and leesy
finish.

Wine Diva tasted- July 11, 2006
Thornhaven Pinot Gris, Okanagan BC, 2005- Prettily hued in a salmonish
shade. A similar leesy/yeasty nose as the Chard/Sauv above but with softer fruit
and mineral aromas. Fresh and zippy citrus flavours slightly austere in
the fruit department with just a hint of spritz.
$14.90 (only available at the winery)

Thornhaven Gewurztraminer, Okanagan BC, 2005- The Thornhaven Gew has
been their flagship wine-always good although the sweetness varies slightly
depending on the vintage. The 2005 is no exception, off-dry (less sweet than the
2004) with rich tropical fruit aromas, licorice (remember sen sen's), rosewater,
orange blossoms and cold cream. Fresh, fruity and spicy!

Thornhaven Diosa del Sol, Okanagan BC, 2005- This intriguing little
dessert gem was a first for Wine Diva.
An unoaked Chardonnay with just enough residual (sugar) to make it dessert-y.
Co-owner Jack Fraser poured me a sample of the Diosa (translation
goddess) and then plopped a bowl of milk chocolate rosettes in front of me. The
rosettes looked good (don't get me wrong) but the combo didn't compute.
Needless to say WD was proven wrong (not for
the first time).
Creamy and sweet (although not cloying) with honeyed pears and apples. Initially
the milk chocolate numbed the wine but then the pair started to harmonize
becoming soft, silky and less sweet.

Sumac Ridge
I have a hard time popping into Sumac Ridge and not making a
rest-stop in the Cellar Door Bistro. Suspiciously, the time of day I generally
pass by (and am parched and my tummy is making itself loudly known) aligns
itself with feeding time.
But one thing I know for certain-taste first, eat second.
The same day I arrived preparations were being made for the celebration of
their 25th anniversary and the place was absolutely vibrating.
Congrats Sumac Ridge and Harry McWatters cheers to another successful 25!

Dinner at Mission Hill's Terrace Restaurant
For
those of you that have visited the incredible Mission Hill Family Estate Winery
no explanation is needed. But for those of you who are planning on a visit to
Kelowna I seriously suggest you make reservations at the Terrace Restaurant. The
view is second to none, the grounds are immaculate and surrounding architecture
is awe inspiring. Romanesque columns ascend proudly toward the endless blue
skies, ancient resurrected fountains gurgle away-hiding the secrets of all those
who have come before and graceful archways return us to the times of kings and
gladiators. Possibly the most amazing element is that the entire Mission Hill
compound has been built to blend in with the surrounding hillsides.
Some may say "over the top" but I say a legacy has been built in the best
possible taste which can only assist the already booming Okanagan wine and
culinary agritourism industry.
We had a fantastic four course meal paired with wines from Mission Hill's 5
Vineyard and SLC- Select Lot Collection (which I reviewed extensively in
Wine Diva's
July newsletter).
An Organic Suncatcher Courgette Salad with Beet Dressing- Delicate shaved
summer yellow and green zucchini and string beans with a lovely vinaigrette and
beet drizzle. This was served with the Mission Hill 5 Vineyard Pinot Grigio
Hand made Farfalle Pasta-with fresh organic peas and baby carrots in a
light butter sauce topped with tomato concassé.
Perfect with the rich and buttery Mission Hill SLC Chardonnay.
An incredible Cheese Plate loaded with a selection of local and Okanagan
artisan cheeses with figs and Mission Hill's own Oculus marinated cherries.
Served with the lush SLC Syrah.
An adorable Mini Panna Cotta Gâteau-with a
cookie base and lavender whipped cream served with the Mission Hill SLC Riesling

Quails' Gate
A perennial favorite of BC wine drinkers and of
Wine Diva herself. When we visited the tiny tasting room was
absolutely crammed with tasters. The staff kept their cool and the lineups of
samplers and purchasers moved along very efficiently.
WD does wonder though if plans are in the works for a new (and
larger) tasting room.
Quails' Gate Chenin Blanc, Okanagan BC, 2005- The first to make Chenin
Blanc in BC (Wine Diva loves Loire Chenin's)
this Quails' Gate wine has become a classic summertime quaff. The 2005 vintage
has 14% Sauvignon Blanc added-perhaps due to the low 2005 vintage yields and is
bright with aromatic hints of honey blossoms, grass and minerals. Soft orchard
fruit aromas and tart citrus in the mouth. Zippy and refreshing.

Calona-Sandhill
Wine Diva always loves to spend an afternoon visiting with BC's
longest tenured winemaker Calona/Sandhill's Howard Soon. He's ever
entertaining, full of useful information and is always willing to
answer Wine Diva's burning
viticulture-ish questions.
On this particular afternoon Howard showed us some of the new toys obtained
since partnering with former Port Moody resident Andrés/Peller
Estates.
Andrés closed the Port Moody plant and moved
everything north to Kelowna where WD
observed some of the Peller wines being bottled.
Howard and his beautiful associate winemaker Stephanie Leinemann are busier than
ever these days but they did take some time to taste some new releases (and
compare and contrast some previously released wines). Some are top secret and if
I told you I would have to be taken out to the vineyards and shot so I'll just
pass along the risk-free tasting notes!

(the as yet to be released)...
Sandhill Small Lots Viognier-Osprey Ridge Vineyard, Okanagan BC, 2005-
A
hint of old world elegance with a pinch of the brazen new world. Howard asked me was if I thought this Viognier was too-ripe (a classic dilemma
with Viognier grapes due to the time they must be left 'hanging' to ripen on the
vines). I was adamant at that time-NO!
*Wine Diva's preference (and since it's my
website) is a solid middle ground between old world Rhone Valley and new world
Californian/Australian Viognier.
Lovely lady lush-tropical and peachy (like Fergie), *lemon meringue
pie, orange blossoms and creamed honey stretched into a long sweetly

Dinner at Quails' Gate Old Vines Patio
Wow, it's huge!.
That was my first thought as we walked into Quails' Gate Old Vines
Patio-it's huge!
Saying that I mean there is a lot of seating available but it is broken up very
well into wood beam and tile levels, patio and indoor seating and windows
everywhere!
Wine Diva was very excited. This was my
first trip to the highly acclaimed restaurant and we had made reservations a
month in advance to be sure a good seat!
We were seated at a deuce in the front corner of the restaurant with a view of
the outside deck and the wonderful Quails' Gate vines below us. It was a warm
night and the restaurant was packed. We ordered a bottle of the Quails Gate
Family Reserve Riesling, 1998-rich and oily with peach pit, green
apple, petrol and citrus showing great old world age-ability (a reason
to visit the restaurant alone is their library of wines) and sipped as we played
with the menu.
We ordered our starters: mine a wonderful Creamy cool Mushroom Soup and my
partner a refreshing Chilled Red Pepper Soup we followed that with house-made
ravioli and spinach, goat cheese salads.
A lovely restaurant well thought out. We discovered part way through our meal
that all the windows open up-essentially making the inside lower level one with
the patio.
Day 4
Summerhill Pyramid Winery
We arrived just as a tour bus was finishing up their
tasting.
The only tour members left in the tasting room were a young man, who had taken
up residence playing a sonata at the grand piano and a middle aged
gentleman leaning against said grand who kept motioning to a female staff member
to refill his glass. He would try to grab her hand (or the bottle) to fill the
glass more. The poor woman was being very polite but had to keep saying no to
him (despite knowing he was not driving). I felt bad for her.

A Night at the El!
Wine Diva had never stayed at the Eldorado
before but would certainly recommend it now that I have! Old world charm (not
too old world mind you) with a vibrant history that clings to every aspect and
crevice of this monument.
The bar is famous for its classic men's club feel and heavy dark wood. It leads
out onto a patio and then the boardwalk where diners and drinkers can watch the
boats in the marina and the expanse of lake beyond. We pulled onto the deck in
the mid-afternoon and ordered a kir royal while we relaxed, enjoyed the summer
breeze and waited for our friend-artist Alex Fong to arrive.
A wonderful relaxing evening. We visited with some long time friends who had
moved to Kelowna from Toronto several months earlier and didn't stumble
too far from the Eldorado for the evening.

Besides, I wanted the chance to see the property before the multi-multi

The
providence of Château des Aveylans is dripping in romantic history (translation
oh-so-Wine Diva).
Owned by the Knights of the Round Table (yes I did say Knights of the Round
Table) until the 12th century this historic site in Costières de
Nimes (located between Provence and Languedoc in the south of France) was a stop
for those on pilgrimage to Saint-Jean de Compostelle then ownership passed on to
the Dukes of Uzes in the 16th century. Today the Château is
represented by the Templers cross. Is Wine Diva
intrigued…you bet your favorite MAC lipgloss she is!

How Cheesy
Back to Carmelis
Carmelis Artisan Goat Cheese
Despite several visits to Carmelis in the past two years
Wine Diva had never had an actual tour of the
grounds. This time owner Ofri Barmor (her husband Ofer was in the process of
making cheese) took showed me around. First she showed me the meticulously clean
cheese making facilities which we observed from outside the door (we did not
enter to prevent any contamination), then downstairs to the ageing room.
Carmelis keeps the cheeses marked by age and individually wrapped or sectioned
depending on the style. Some of the wheels of goat cheese were two years old
already-very impressive as the Barmors only moved to Kelowna from Israel three
years ago. Their move was good news to us here in BC. "In Israel", Ofri says,
"everyone eats goat cheese". Not so much here, but we are certainly making great
strides (Wine Diva is the pace car of the
goat pack). Goat cheese is easier to digest and many people who are lactose
intolerant don't have the same digestive problems consuming goat cheese.
When Barmor's moved to Canada they brought with them secret recipes for making
wonderful cheese and they continue to improve their product, make it more
conducive to our Canadian palate while introducing us to new and unique cheese
styles.
By the way, if you visit-ask to visit the lazy goat's...
lazy goats-who knew? City gal Wine Diva thought they ran loose on the mountain side-romping and playing!
Cheese Notes:
Chevry-A spread-able creamy sweet and herbaceous young chevre. With dill
(think capers and lox) or with herbs de provence (great on a plate of
Mediterranean style crudités).
Moonlight- Small round disc with soft rind. Wrapped in grape leaves
during a short aging process to give flavour. It is earthy, chalky and creamy
with soft herbal nuances.(3-4 weeks ageing)
Heavenly-Creamy, white and ultra smooth with subtle sharp goat-y flavour.
Would be great with some quince or fig jam. (3-4 weeks ageing)
Chabichou- Creamy white centre with a classic outer firmer ring under the
rind. The rind is soft but dusted with vegetable ash, the flavour starts creamy
and mild but flavour and sharpness grows and you savour it. Tubular pyramid
shape.
Misty-One of Wine Diva's fave's-This
small disc is coated with the same imported French kiln-dried root vegetable
ash. The Misty is sweet, wine-y and herbaceous with flavours reminiscent of
olive oil.
Piccolo-For those who like the sharpness and pungency in Goat Cheese. The
Piccolo has the (similar to Chabichou) white, creamy center and chalkier outer
ring, the soft rind is also dusted with vegetable ash and is where most of the
sharpness is concentrated.
Tuscany-We tried three types (not all are readily available). The first
being a Tuscany injected like a blue cheese-interesting layers of flavours
richness and depth. The second a 2mos-old style with small 'swiss cheese' like
holes, its more rubbery texture is great for melting on sandwiches. The third (WD's
favorite)-1 1/2 years old and had a gruyere (think fondue) like flavour and was
bold and salty.
Horizon-2 year old cheese with similarities to morbier in the vein
running throughout. Also an ash rind but with hints of almonds (almost marzipan)
and a sharp, earthy and herbal finish.
Lior-Comes from the name of one of Ofri's two daughters. We tried two
styles of Lior-the first a gorgeous Manchego-type, sharp, wild and salty. The
second a 2 year old special edition-unique and addictive, studded with bay
leaves and peppercorns. The flavour is unforgettable.
Carmel- Ofri's eldest daughter (also where the name Carmelis comes from I
assume). This aged hard cheese has a briny flavour, and a nice sharpness to it.
Smoked Carmel-I love the hickory smoke aroma and flavour of this cheese.
It is very hard and would be good chunked off and served with a nice, big oaked
Chardonnay.
Vintage-A wine soaked hard cheese with attractive red rind. It is salty
and sharp and has lovely olive and red wine flavours. It's mouth-coating
flavours stay with you.
Goatgonzola-Perhaps most famous for its name, this is a love it-or hate
it hard cheese. It does differ greatly from what you may recognize as
gorgonzola. The sharpness of the blue cheese style is pungent but still quite
creamy as it melts in your mouth. Break it up on a pear and walnut salad!
You can purchase Carmelis Cheese locally at their kiosk at the Granville Island
Public Market (usually located at the food court end)

Champagne Rose Petal Jelly-By
Artisan Edibles made in Parksville BC. This
pretty little jar is filled with pink-red jelly and has real rose petals
suspended in its floral sweetness.
A great cheese accompaniment that Wine Diva
picked up during her wine country touring. $10.99

On a final note, I do apologize to
the wineries I missed along the way (there is only ONE
Wine Diva after all). I am trying to swing a
second trip-specifically to the south Okanagan (and the wineries I couldn't find
in Cawston).
See you next month!
Cheers, WD
