Parker Station Syrah, Santa Barbara
County California, 2003-Pay attention here peeps! A limited amount of this came
into the country and was to be put onto the shelves on Thursday July 29th.
Lush aromas...brambleberry and black cherry topped with chocolate
shavings, deep but still amazingly fresh and bright. In the battle of
quality and price...this is a winner!

Peller Estates Pinot Grigio, Okanagan BC, 2005- Lush stone
fruit and clean mineral aromas with a hint of citrus rind. A lovely creamy body
weight and texture. A very good value.

Peller Estates Reserve Pinot Gris, Okanagan BC, 2005-Wine
Diva has no problem saying that this wine is better this year than
last. Be it vintage or perhaps due to the new partnership of Calona and
Andrés? Certainly some oak-y
aromas on this wine giving off toasty aromas along with honeyed-dipped orchard
fruit a hint of herbs and minerals finishing clean with zesty citrus rind.

Penfolds ‘Koonunga
Hill’ Cabernet-Merlot, Australia, 2003-
Exceptionally vibrant with lush aromas of blackberries, chocolate,
eucalyptus and fruit cake. Soft, well integrated tannins and a long
sweetly spiced finish. Great paired with a selection of cheese from
Les Amis du Fromage like; Fougerus a
super creamy ‘brie-style’ from Champagne, Delice des Gourmets-a
delicate triple crèam from France (similar to Delice de Bourgogne-a
Wine Diva fave) and Keen’s
Cheddar from Neal’s Yard in England. Excuse me now while I head to
the fridge…$16.99

Penfolds Bin 138 (Grenache/Shiraz/Mourvedre)
Australia, 2003- Intense plum, chocolate and chalky minerals.
Rich velvety mouth-feel and a good shot of acidity. Reasonable price
for a GSM from this well know Aussie producer with the highly
recognizable, classic label.

Pentage Pinot Gris, Okanagan BC, 2005-Although
Wine Diva has had a few
fly-by samplings of the Pentage wines over the past
they are a bit under-the-radar for many BC'ers. Joie uses their
facilities to produce their cultish wines so you know there must be
some correlation between quality! Located on Skaha Lake just south
of Penticton perhaps they are far enough off the Naramata route for
most people to find? Either way, savvy restaurateurs know what
Pentage is all about and many of their wines are scooped up quickly
upon release.
The Pinot Gris is all about tropical fruit, white flowers, soft
mineral and white peaches. Quite lush in the mouth, round and creamy
almost boozy with fresh citrus and a long zesty finish.
$17.50 (sold out but available on restaurant wine lists)

Peregrine Pinot Noir, Central Otago New Zealand, 2002-A gorgeous
rich nose showing smoke, black cherry, leather and sweet grass. Fresh
sweet berry flavours cedar, spice, earth and tobacco in an exceptionally
long and lucious finish. Another new Wine Diva
fave!

Peter Lehmann
‘Black Queen’, 1997-Australia-100% Shiraz with the power and
intensity of a big Aussie Shiraz to be sure! Sweet and extracted without
being as cloying as some sparkling shiraz on the market. Gentle bubble
in this unctuous beverage that is layered with black fruit, spice and
eucalyptus. Worth tracking and trying!

Pfaffenheim Gewurztraminer,
Alsace France, 2004-
One of those bottles that when you open you say to yourself, why do I
always forget how good this wine is? Honey blossoms, blood orange,
lychees and Turkish delight with hints of cold cream. Sweet and
oily-rich in the mouth with rose petals, tropical fruit and finished
with Asian spices.
Paired well with a selection of cheese from Les Amis du Fromage like;
Brindamour and the bolder Munster.$18.99

Pfaffenheim 'Steinert' Grand Cru Gewürztraminer,
Alsace France, 2001- A voluptuous, aromatic Gewürztraminer
with full on rose oil and orange blossom aromas. Turkish delight,
cold cream (yes cold cream), sweet Asian spices and mango add to the
cocktail of aromas. A beauty of a wine made to last!

Pierre Sparr Cremant d'Alsace Brut Reserve, Alsace France-
Pretty pinky-salmon hue with lovely persistent mousse. Bright
fruit aromas-banana and sweet berries and hints of dried fruit. A
fresh and creamy party in your mouth. Happy, happy, happy!

Poplar Grove Pinot Gris, Naramata
BC, 2005-
Never, ever a disappointment. Crisp, elegant and serious.
Tropical fruit, white flowers, minerals, peaches and grapefruit.
Just a hint of creamy lees. Owners Ian and Gitta Sutherland
suggest pairing the pinot gris with the Poplar Grove Double Cream
Camembert or Naramata Bench Blue.

Poplar Grove Pinot Blanc, Naramata BC, 2005-Soft white floral aromas with
prevalent mineral tones. In the mouth it is crisp, creamy and citrus-y with
herbal nuances. Definitely a food or (ahem) cheese wine.
$18.00 only at Poplar Grove Winery
Wine Diva tasted- July 10, 2006
Poplar Grove 'New Block' Merlot, Naramata BC, 2004-It had been released just
two weeks prior to our arrival so it was still a bit young and tight (mind out
of the gutter please). The vines are younger than the exceedingly popular
Benchmark Merlot and was therefore lighter with fresh cherries, violets and
earthy aromas. Spicy and creamy in the mouth with sour cherry, some tobacco and
mint.
$20.00
Wine Diva tasted- July 10, 2006
Poplar Grove 'Benchmark' Merlot, Naramata BC, 2003-Salma Hayek
in a bottle. Lush curves ahead on this liquid treat. Ripe black cherries,
blackberries and smoky plums draped in bittersweet chocolate,
harnessed with leather and sweetened up with a bit of vanilla spice.
The P.G wines are usually hard to track down, but an attempt
would be well worth it. If not a trip to the winery to sample and
buy is Wine Diva's suggestion...just don't forget to try the
cheese!
